Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's strategist communications adviser. The White House's strategic communications advisor Mercedes Schlapp is required to face a variety of challenges. These include a President who also has his own director of communication and a variety of legal battles that may disrupt the communications strategy. Schlapp is able to remain in the right frame of mind and stay on top of her game and work in conjunction with White House teams in political issues as well as legislative affairs and policy and the overall communications staff. The focus is on topics like school safety, opioids and infrastructure and trade. At the moment the director does not interact much with journalists. The media spotlight was on her in the wake of being announced as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp's position in the role of White House Strategic Communications Advisor is not an easy one. The White House strategic communications adviser must deal with multiple legal disputes which could affect the communication policy of the administration along with Cabinet secretaries involved in scandals of their own. Yet, through all of it Schlapp remains focused on the mission in hand and has worked closely with the White House's political as well as legislative affairs and policy shops as in the communications department in order to oversee policy implementations. So far, her primary focus has been issues such as safety in schools and the opioid crisis, trade, infrastructure as well as other topics. She doesn't interact with reporters at all in her current job. It was in March that she gained a sudden burst attention, when it became widely known that Schlapp was a potential candidate to take over Hope Hicks's position as the director of communications. The fight has been ugly. Schlapp's allies started fighting Tony Sayegh in the press. Schlapp told that the Washington Examiner that she spoke with Sayegh about a recent negative article on him.
